The Ratol Mango: India vs. Pakistan – Who Really Owns It?
When it comes to mangoes, few varieties evoke the kind of loyalty and passion that Ratol (or Rataul) mangoes do. Loved for their incredibly sweet aroma, soft pulp, and small size, these mangoes are often spoken of with reverence. But one question sparks friendly (and sometimes heated) debates across borders:
Is Ratol mango originally from India or Pakistan?
🌍 The Origin Debate: India vs. Pakistan
Both nations lay claim to the origin of this coveted fruit:
-
Pakistan’s Claim:
Pakistanis proudly say the Ratol mango originates from the Ratol/Rataul area near Multan or other parts of Punjab, where it was historically cultivated and exported. They regard it as one of their finest varieties and celebrate its intense flavor and aroma. -
India’s Claim:
On the Indian side, the name “Rataul” is strongly linked to a small village in Uttar Pradesh, India. Here, the mango has been grown for generations, and many local farmers and connoisseurs believe India is the true birthplace of this variety. Even in historical horticultural records and oral traditions, Rataul (UP) finds frequent mention as the origin point.
At ASD Orchards in Unchagaon, Uttar Pradesh, we proudly grow Ratol mangoes as part of our legacy – cultivated by our family since 1982.
