Caring for the Tree Before the Fruit – Our Traditional Lime Protection Practice

At ASD Orchards, good fruit begins long before flowering or harvest. It begins with the health of the tree itself.

This week, we are carrying out a traditional lime whitewash treatment across our orchard — a practice that farmers have followed for generations to protect and strengthen fruit trees naturally.

🌳 What Is Lime Whitewashing?

We prepare a mixture of natural limestone (calcium-based) and water, and add a carefully measured amount of copper oxychloride — a mineral-based protective compound that has been responsibly used in agriculture for decades.

This mixture is applied to the trunk of each tree by hand.

It may look simple from the outside — white trunks standing in neat rows — but it serves an important purpose.

☀️ Why Do We Do It?

Tree trunks face constant stress:

  • Strong sunlight

  • Temperature fluctuations

  • Moisture and humidity

  • Hidden insects and fungal spores

The lime coating helps by:

  • Reflecting harsh sunlight and reducing bark cracking

  • Protecting against fungal infections

  • Discouraging insects from settling in bark crevices

  • Supporting overall trunk health

Healthy bark allows the tree to transport nutrients efficiently — and that directly impacts fruit quality in the coming season.

🕰️ A Slow and Careful Process

This is not a quick spray job. Each tree is:

  1. Inspected manually

  2. Cleaned where needed

  3. Carefully coated at the base

For an orchard of our size, this takes several days of steady work. It requires patience and attention to detail — but we believe preventive care is always better than cure.

🌱 Preparing for the Next Harvest

Strong trees handle seasonal changes better. They flower more uniformly and support fruit development more efficiently.

When you enjoy mangoes, lychees, or other fruits from ASD Orchards, you’re tasting months of behind-the-scenes care like this.

Because for us, farming isn’t just about harvesting fruit — it’s about nurturing the tree that gives it.
